How a timing belt works
A timing belt lets the camshaft or camshafts if your engine has 2 (like the one shown here) rotate in a synchronized manner with the crankshaft. The camshafts are the ones actuating the valves opening and closing while the crankshaft moves the pistons.
Replacing the timing belt on a vehicle that works perfectly well can be done using this method which uses a universal DOHC engine timing tool instead of a specific engine tool.
In case the timing belt slipped from its teeth or the engine runs rough with a lot of noises, then the method using the specific engine timing tool is to be followed, click on the below link if this is your case.

Description of our timing belt changing method
We will be using a universal toothed belt pulley blocking tool, acquired online for a few dollars, marking the existing belt with paint, transposing the marks to the new timing belt, and doing the replacement, then tightening the timing belt twice.
This guarantees the new belt is fitted without altering the timing synchronization between each of the crankshaft and camshafts.

Preparatory works of timing belt replacement on Dacia Duster
Lift the vehicle, take ou the right wheel, put the vehicle on jack stand, then take out the engine protection cover and fit your hydraulic jack beneath the engine using a piece of wood in between as this will be used later during the timing belt replacement:
Take out the part of the fender's inner mudguard that uncovers the crankshaft pulley:
Insert a piece of wood between the oil pan and the chassis, then remove the right engine mount:
Take one or more pictures of the serpentine belt prior to removing it so you can later know how to fit the new one back:
Take out the serpentine accessory belt using an extra long size 13 combination spanner which you fit to the serpentine belt tensioner bolt and rotate clockwise until the belt is untightened.
Hold the spanner with something (like a cable tie) so you can take out the serpentine belt as shown in the picture to the right.
Hold the spanner with something (like a cable tie) so you can take out the serpentine belt as shown in the picture to the right.
Unscrew all bolts of the upper and lower timing belt covers and take out the upper cover.
During this operation, you will need to raise the engine with the hydraulic jack in order to easily access some of the bolts or nuts.

Use locking pliers on both the plastic timing belt cover and crankshaft pulley to block the pulley so you can loosen its bolt and take it out along with the lower timing belt and water pump cover:
The timing belt is now accessible and ready for replacement:

Refitting a new timing belt on a DOHC engine (shown on Dacia Duster 1.6 16V, equipped with Renault K4M engine):
Prior to loosening the timing belt, fit the camshafts toothed belt pulleys locking tool, which can be any universal tool used on DOHC engines and that can be found on any online shop (see bottom of page.
This tool is however not reliable so you need to put 4 marks with white paint on your timing belt:
One mark on each of the toothed belt pulleys
Two marks on the crankshaft sprocket, see further below how these marks will be used for refitting a new timing belt.

Loosen the timing belt tensioner and take out the timing belt, its tensioner and the rolling wheel.
In the case of the Dacia Duster, opening and holes are provided in the chassis to access the rolling wheel central bolt as shown here:

Put the same paint marks on the new belt as for the old timing belt.
Make sure to count the teeth between all marks to be certain that your markings are identical.

If you're replacing the water pump, do it now and first.
Then, refit the new rolling wheel and belt tensioner, without tightening their bolts, and while keeping them a bit away from the engine body. This is to facilitate the refitting of the timing belt which you should refit last:

Bring the marks on the timing belt to the exact place of the ones on the toothed belt pulleys and crankshaft sprocket.
These pictures show how the belt pulleys slightly moved despite the locking tool, thus the need to use the paint markings.

Rotate by hand or using a large screwdriver one of the pulleys and the crankshaft sprocket as well, in order to have the new timing belt fitted with all marks on it matching the ones on the metal parts, and secure it with cable ties:

Timing belt tightening
You can now tighten the bolts of the belt tensioner and rolling wheel and proceed to the timing belt tightening in two stages: because no specific engine tool has been used, it is mandatory to tighten, check and re-tighten:
- Release the lower cable tie that holds the timing belt to the crankshaft sprocket
- Degrease the inner contact part of the crankshaft pulley and the outer contact part of the crankshaft sprocket and temporarily reassemble the crankshaft pulley.
- Tighten the timing belt with the tensioner, using an allen key to bring the indicator to any place in between the notches.
- Rotate the engine by hand more than one turn to make sure all is ok
- Turn on the engine for a few seconds
- Check the belt tightening indicator and re-tighten if needed.
- Turn on the engine again and make sure all is smooth prior to re-assembling the timing belt covers.
This video shows how the timing belt is checked and the engine noise as well, making sure all is fine and smooth prior to refitting the timing belt covers and serpentine belt.
Complete your intervention by removing the crankshaft pulley, refitting the timing belt covers, the crankshaft pulley, the serpentine belt, the engine mount, i.e. by reversing all above steps.
