Why the powertrain support bar is much useful on transversal engine configuration:
The engine bar or beam, sits on the inner fenders of the car as shown.
It allows you to either hold the entire powertrain, or to attach separately each of the engine and gearbox.
The handle-nut is there to adjust the height of the entire powertrain for refitting the engine mounts for example, or to adjust the alignment of the engine and gearbox when refitting the gearbox, etc.

On transverse powertrains, the engine support beam and the powertrain are parallel:
If you had separated your engine and gearbox, you may attach each to the beam for adjusting the alignment prior to pushing the gearbox through the clutch:

Simply rotate each handle clockwise to raise the powertrain, or counterclockwise to lower it.
