Works to carry out underneath the vehicle for bumper removal
There is no need to lift the car, just have it parked on a level surface.
You have to unscrew and remove a few screws and bolts as shown:
You have to unscrew and remove a few screws and bolts as shown:
- The bolts that hold your bumper to the car bottom chassis, usually M6 bolts with normal hexagonal heads
- The screws that fix the bumper and the inner fender mudguards together, usually with female Torx heads.
Works to carry out to the car sides for front bumper removal
The bumper is held to the car by one bolt on each side.
If you can't easily put your socket in there to unscrew it, remove the nearest screw that holds the mudguard, and pull the mudguard out with your hand so you can insert the socket, and extension and the ratchet handle as shown.

Extend you ratchet as long as you find it practical and take off completely the bumper's screw.
With your hand, gently pull the bumper up then out to make sure it is free from other holding clips.

Works to carry out on top of bumper, hood open
Again, remove all screws or bolts that hold the bumper to the car frame and the headlights and gently pull out the front bumper little by little and by moving your hand from one side to the other.
Before taking off the bumper completely, leave it hanging and come back to the sides of the car to disconnect the electrical connectors. There are one or two on each side of your vehicle, since wires are used to connect the daytime lights, the foglights and the front parking sensors.
Once done, the bumper can be removed.
On large vehicles, two persons are required for this task unlike the case of this supermini.

Inspecting the steel cross beam behind the bumper
If you are replacing your front bumper due to an accident, then be aware that the plastic bumper is not the main element to absorb energy at significant shocks and impacts.
There's a steel cross beam behind the plastic bumper, with preset deformation energy absorbers.
Carefully inspect the cross-beam and the energy absorbers as well and make sure none of those is bent or damaged.
Do not refit a new bumper on a bent transverse steel beam, this is the real bumper that protects you and your vehicle, while the plastic bumper is just a decorative cover with limited shock absorbing capabilities.

Refitting and aligning the front bumper
Insert the bumper from top in its intended place, enough to allow it being temporarily held and reconnect all electrical connectors, then refit all bolts and screws but do not tighten them yet.
Make sure of the alignment between bumper and hood, bumper and fenders and bumper and headlights.
Press the bumper with your hand or pull it off until the alignment is perfect, then tighten the concerned bolt.
Note that the headlights can be also moved and aligned by a matter of 1/2 inch (1cm) by loosening their upper bolt (see below picture).
Once all elements are well aligned, continue tightening the remaining screws and bolts all around the bumper.
