Checking what's wrong with the headlight beams
Park your vehicle perpendicularly to a wall and at some 50cm distance.
Watch well the marks of your headlights' beams on that wall.
Watch well the marks of your headlights' beams on that wall.
- If while driving at night, you had noticed that only one headlight was wrongly aimed, compare the mark of that beam to the one which is ok and follow the steps explained further below to adjust it, i.e. make it at the same height from ground than the other one, and at the same distance from the car's limits as well.
- If you feel that both headlights need adjustment, you need to watch well where each of the beams is hitting the road surface and then apply the below adjustments. The only possible method with no headlight beam aiming tool, is trial en error, i.e. make some adjustment, test drive the car, then correct your beams again until the road surface is well lit. But in this case, you need to make sure both marks on the wall are the same distance from the car's center axis.
- Always test drive your vehicle with the low beam, the high beam will automatically follow.

Adjusting the car's headlight beams horizontally (right and left)
Find the horizontal screw that extends out of the headlight and rotate it while observing your beam on the wall.
You will notice that the beam moves right or left.
Apply the necessary adjustment until the beam's light mark on the wall is ok.
We're showing here the headlight of a Renault Clio 4 with the headlight plug open so you can see how this screw is attached to the headlight's reflector by the means of a ball joint (in white). It tilts the reflector around a horizontal axis, which in turn changes the beam's aiming.

Adjusting the car's headlight beam vertically (height from ground level)
Find the vertical screw that allows to move the headlights' reflector vertically, which in turn adjusts the height of the headlights' beams.
Turn the screw right or left (here using an allen key as shown in the picture) while observing the beams on the wall.
Adjust the headlight which you feel wrongly aimed, until it matches the other one.
You can use a measuring tape from ground level to be accurate, you can also consider a slightly higher beam to the right side of the vehicle.

Test driving the car for headlights' beam checking
Once you've done with the headlights' beams adjustments on the wall, drive you vehicle to confirm the result.
Make sure of the following with the low beams on:
Make sure of the following with the low beams on:
- Lighting hits road edge
- Lighting is uniform
- You can see well when driving at the speed of 60Km/h, with no need to shift to the high beams
- Both beams are matching, or, the right one is slightly higher
