When can a broken tree trunk be fixed and which material is needed?
All tree trunks can be fixed with this method although we're showing here a broken young medlar tree.
By the end of winter, strong winds have separated a branch, which split the tree trunk in two.
We will apply a fix that will be completely removed the year after, once the tree has healed.
The material used for the fix is about a steel wire, tree wound balm and grafting tape.
You should intervene within 48 hours of the incident.

How to fix the broken tree trunk
Bring the broken branch to its initial position and temporarily fix it with a cable tie or steel wire.
Apply a thick coat of wound balm or grafting wax to the affected part, then cover with grafting tape.
Remove the steel wire and add grafting balm to cover well the whole area as needed.

Once done, cut three pieces of a thin branch (or wood pieces) and tie them to the trunk with thick steel wire as shown to mechanically support the trunk.
That's it for now, your tree will heal, the two parts of the tree trunk will stick together again after a while and your tree will withstand the next winds until reaching summer.

What to do with the trunk fix on the next year?
The below pictures show that same medlar tree the next year: it has grown like if never broken.
To note that the steel wire must then be removed not to cause an injury to the growing trunk.
