Symptoms and context of shift linkages that lost their grease
- Slight metal on metal clinking / rattling noise generated by the counter-weight of the mechanism
- Gearbox shift stick too loose but still works well and all gears can still be switched easily
- Accelerated wear of the gearbox shift cables and their ball joints
Note: This intervention is carried out on the gearbox side, where heat generate by the engine and repeated engine or chassis pressure washing could eliminate the lubricant of the gearbox linkages in this area. It does not show how to maintain the linkages on the stick shift side.

Dismantling the gearbox mounted shift mechanism
You need to separate the shift cable joints (ball joints) from the gearbox mounted mechanism using a large flat screwdriver and by applying pressure on the ball joint so it gets separated.
Personally, I prefer to dismantle the ball joints that can be dis-assembled (see below pictures), take out all other linkages that have ball joints (only one in this case), clean all parts, apply grease, then re-assemble.

In this case the following parts were dismounted:
The mechanism itself cannot be separated from the gearbox, you can only extract some parts as shown.
- The ball joints of the two main linkage cables coming from the gearbox stick shift
- The small linkage between the counter-weight and the gearbox mounted mechanism
- The counter-weight of the mechanism

Greasing and refitting manual gearbox shift cable joints and mechanism
Refit the different parts to the gearbox mounted gear change mehanism, starting with the counter-weight and its linkage:
Use a C-clamp to re-assemble the ball joints if you can apply enough pressure with your bare hands:
Re-assemble the ball joints of the cable linkages and refit them to the mechanism.
