Preparatory works for the refitting of an engine oil pan (sump)
No replaceable gaskets are used anymore between oil pans and sumps or oil pans and engines.
A gasket maker compound is used instead.
This requires removing completely the old silicone gasket and cleaning very well the gasket surface prior to applying the new gasket maker.

You can use any of the below tools, or better, a combination of all to get the rid of the old silicone gasket of the engine oil sump:
- Cutter knife used horizontally and parallel to the gasket surface as shown in the left picture (do not use the blade in any other position)
- Spatula used on the center of its blade only, not on the corners
- The abrasive side of a sponge
- Metal brush preferably with brass wires
The oil sump (pan) gasket surface should be perfectly clean after you finish.
Use a degreaser like kerosene or alcohol or white spirit and a soft cloth to complete the job.

Applying the new silicone RTV gasket maker and refitting the oil pan
Try first to refit the oil pan (sump) to the engine block without any gasket maker, just as a training for making sure how things fit together, the bolts location, the orientation of the parts, etc.
Apply a thick coat of RTV silicone gasket maker.
Chose the one with the highest temperature resistance capability, usually 600F.
Make sure to circle the bolts threads of the oil pan and to apply a continuous layer of gasket maker.
Apply to one side only.

Assemble the oil pan to the engine block, refit the bolts and tighten to 0.8 mdaN.
First, tighten all bolts with your hand, then to torque by alternating the sequence to opposite bolts.
