Wondering where to refill the windshield washer liquid?
You just need to make sure you don't mix between the collant and windshield wash liquid.
The below picture shows both together:
The below picture shows both together:
- Windshield wash liquid reservoir has a blue plug which simply opens under your fingers pressure. In most cases, the reservoir is located inside the front left fender, behind the inner fender mudguard, thus you only see its neck and filling point from the engine compartment. A pictogram depicting a windshield with a jet of water and a windshield wiper is embossed on it.
- Coolant tank is fully visible and is ball shaped in most cases (but not necessarily), with a black plug that must be screwed in firmly. A pictogram depicting water and heat inside a triangle and/or an open user manual is usually embossed on it, as a warning not to open the tank when the engine is hot.
The windshield liquid refill cap, has no screw thread, you just open it by pulling it up with your fingers:

See above for the coolant tank identification.
Click on the below button to see when and how to refill coolant, out of all fluids refill in a car, this is the most critical one as it requires some caution. As a general rule, you can only adjust coolant level on a cold engine. To make sure you get the right level, it is advised to refill it in the morning before starting your car, i.e. after it was left to cool down for the night. |
When to add coolant to your engine?
You should not wait until you get a low coolant level signal, or until your engine heats abnormally!
Check your coolant level on a cold engine (morning time before starting the car) at least once every 3 months and adjust the level.
Some ageing engines will start consuming coolant and you'd need to check its level more often like once a month.

Wondering where and how to refill motor oil?
The engine oil cap is always located at the top of the engine.
Although most would have an oiler pictogram, some would simply be just black or even yellow.

To check your oil level, simply pull out the oil level dipstick, wipe it with a tissue, put it back again then pull it out again and check that oil is visible up to the upper mark. Oil level dipsticks could have different types of marks like cuts or a pointed hole, but they all have one mark for the highest admitted level and the other for the lowest admitted level.
When adding oil, make sure to reach the high level but do not go beyond it.
CAUTION: ALWAYS USE OIL OF THE SAME GRADE THAN THE ONE YOU HAD USED DURING YOUR PREVIOUS OIL CHANGE, KEEP ADDING OIL OF THE SAME GRADE AND QUALITY, SEE FURTHER BELOW OUR LINKS TO MOTOR OILS GRADES AND USES.

Wondering where and how to refill brake / clutch fluid?
You should not add brake fluid because its level drops down when the brake pads or shoes are worn, then automatically goes up when replacing the pads, since you have to push back the caliper pistons.
The brake fluid reservoir is usually located underneath the windshield, but indeed inside the engine compartment.
Its pictogram shows a circle and shoes around it, depicting a drum brake.
You can refill brake fluid only as a temporary measure in case of a hydraulic leak from the calipers' pistons or any other small and slow leak from any other part of the braking system. This is temporary until you fix your leak at the earliest.
See further below how to replace and purge the brake fluid.

Wondering where and how to refill power steering fluid?
Most vehicles now have an electric power steering but older vehicles or current models where it was not possible to fit an electrically powered steering due to space restriction, use a hydraulic steering rack.
You should check the level of your power steering oil monthly and adjust if needed.
Automatic transmission oil should be used (the red one) and it usually necessitates a very small quantity to top up the level.
The steering fluid reservoir is usually found to the front of the engine compartment and is typically cylindrical.
Its plug shows a steering wheel.
Check further below on how to add steering fluid.
