Symptoms of a defective engine cooling system thermostat
The thermostat on the Mitsubishi 4B11 engine is a temperature controlled valve, that uses a thermocouple for opening or closing. When the engine is cold, it is closed with a very small bypass hole ensuring a minium flow.
The purpose of keeping if closed when engine is cold is indeed to accelerate the engine warm-up phase, i.e. reduce its duration since engines do wear 7 times faster when cold compared to their wear rate at normal working temperature.
Upon reaching a preset temperature, which in case of the Mitsubishi Lancer is between 78 and 82 degrees Celsius, the thermostat opens letting the coolant flow towards the radiator and immediately bringing down its temperature or at least regulating it.
The thermostat also serves as an accelerator to the cabin's heating system which benefits from heat quickly, only a minute after turning the engine on, or else this would require several minutes, or even more in extremely cold weather.
Symptoms of a stuck thermostat (it can only be stuck in closed position) are as follows:

Symptoms of a stuck thermostat (it can only be stuck in closed position) are as follows:
- Engine overheating
- Engine overheating while the radiator area remains cold or warm
- Radiator fan doesn't start even when engine is hot
- In pressurized systems (not the case of the Lancer), coolant could boil in the expansion tank
How to replace the thermostat in the Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0 EX
Unscrew the two bolts of the thermostat manifold and pull it off as shown, this uncovers the thermostat which can be taken by hand. Be aware that this will cause part of your coolant to flow down to the floor.
If you do not wish this to happen, drain your coolant completely prior to removing the manifold, ses the link for draining then filling and bleeding your coolant further below just after the images.

Refitting a new thermostat on the Mitsubishi Lancer EX 2.0
Clean well the thermostat housing, insert the newly purchased thermostat and reassemble.
Fill and purge your engine cooling circuit.
That's it!
