Why cabinet doors end up being uneven or misaligned?
Your cupboard doors can get misaligned for various reasons especially if you loaded heavy items like books or magazines. It takes a minute to realign them and make side by side cabinet doors even again, a bit more if this is your first time.
The uneven doors realignment should be done while keeping your things inside the cabinet or cupboard.
The below tutorial shows how to adjust exposed hinges on these two doors that went out of alignment.

Cabinet door hinge adjustment diagram
Before showing you how these doors were realigned, let's understand first which screw is used for which adjustment, in a cabinet door hinge:
|
|
|
Raising or lowering the whole cabinet door
These cupboard doors are almost parallel but the left one is low, when compared to the cabinet box.
It needs to be lifted first.
It needs to be lifted first.
|
The 2 screws that fix the hinge to the wood for each of the 2 or 3 cabinet door hinges are loosened, just enough to be able to move the door up or down.
|
The cabinet door is then pulled up with one hand while the hinge fixing screws are tightened with the other hand.
This did not eliminate the gap completely in this case. |

Tilting the cupboard door to adjust the gap between doors when closed, i.e. making them both horizontal.
Use the horizontal alignment screw to adjust a door horizontally.
Work on one cabinet door at a time and check the result before deciding to adjust the opposite door.
- Tighten the screw of the lower hinge, and loosen the one of the upper hinge if the door is pointing down when closed
- Loosen the screw of the lower hinge, and tighten the one of the upper hinge if the door is pointing up when closed.

Tilting the cupboard door to adjust the gap between door and cabinet wall, i.e. having the surface of both doors even all along their height
This adjustment has two purposes:
Making the gap between the cabinet door and cabinet wall even, with the door open, which also aligns the doors together over their flat surface, putting them in the same plan.
Unlike for lifting or lowering the cabinet door, you only need to adjust the hinge where the gap (when door open) seems small or big.

Unlike for lifting or lowering the cabinet door, you only need to adjust the hinge where the gap (when door open) seems small or big.
- If gap is too small (door touching the cabinet wall), loosen the screw and pull the cabinet door out.
- If gap is too big (door much away from cabinet wall when closed), loosen the screw and push the cabinet door in.
