Project: building a kitchen trolley (cart) | Mobile kitchen island

Many kitchen trolleys are available on the market and are for sure useful and elegant but no one would include all the storage possibilities and functionalities of the below island that turns to be a real kitchen assistant. And building it is so easy, that's no robot!

What you need

Well, almost any kitchen item, wooden item, a bit of wood assembly accessories and a few wheels...
For this one, this is what I used:

4 Chopping boards
2 Bread boxes
2 Dish racks
2 Baskets
1 Old and damaged wooden roller shade
1 Wooden plinth
1 Wooden rod
1 Cutlery set holder

KITCHEN ISLAND 1st FEATURE: STORE POTATOES, ONIONS, & GARLIC

The wooden dish rack has been used for the first level.

Picture
This metal dish rack provided a second storage level.
Picture
It constitutes a solid base along with other wooden items.
Picture
And a second basket for more potatoes or canned food items.
Picture
A basket will then contain the onions, a natural repellent.
Picture
Six wheels provide the required stability.

KITCHEN TROLLEY 2nd FEATURE: DUST FREE STORAGE

Picture
A wooden bread box is fixed to the front. It is part of the structure.
Picture
A metallic box is added to the back.
Picture
The box is also fixed with screws to increase the overall strength.
Picture
The space behind this box is turned into a storage shelf using the other parts of the dish racks.

KITCHEN ISLAND 3d FEATURE: INCREASE THE WORK SURFACE

Picture
The chopping boards are now fixed on top of all to constitute the work surface.
Picture
The extended work surface is huge when both boards are unfolded.
Picture
2 thick boards are assembled in the middle for maximum strength.

2 thin boards are added to the sides and fold on a piston mechanism.

...and when the boards are unfolded. A piston of 8 Kg force was chosen.

Any one of them can be opened when needed to extend the work surface.

KITCHEN TROLLEY 4th FEATURE: SPICE RACK

Picture
Spice racks are first built from wooden plinths and rods.
Picture
Then fixed to the trolley to form part of the structure.

KITCHEN ISLAND 5th FEATURE: COOKING CUTLERY AT HAND

Picture
Time now to fix the cutlery holder for having wooden spoons at hand when cooking.
Picture
The trolley moves easily on its wheels and can be parked anywhere when not in use.
