How to build a $ 45 handrail for rustic garden stairs
These garden stairs have no handrail.
A wooden handrail will be fitted to the wall shown in the right picture.
A wooden handrail will be fitted to the wall shown in the right picture.
The material is very simple:
-Shovel handles purchased at a DIY store for $ 4 each. The handles are of 35mm diameter, are made of hardwood and are protected with a wood protection coat making them weather proof and strong like it should be for a shovel handle!
-Since it is necessary to have them fixed away from the wall, spacers are needed.
In this particular case, I decided to use the screws that fix a new washing machine drum for transportation.
These screws are removed prior to starting the washing machine and it happened I kept not less of 12 of them aside.

Holes are drilled in the natural stone at an 80cm height from the steps.
Because the fixing is happening in natural stone, no anchor bolts are used, simply 10mm wall plugs.
The shovel handle is drilled with an 8.5mm bit to let the screw go through.

The screw has a hexagonal head (lag screw) and can be tightened with an elbow socket wrench.
Do not use any other type of screw as this is the strongest for this application. Using anchor bolts in natural stone is not recommended as this could lead to cracks in the stone and the anchor will get loose with time. |
Here is the final result.
Note in the right picture how the stairs hand rail has been connected to an existing aluminum handrail to make it stronger.

It is a pure mechanical assembly with the shovel handles fixed together and to the aluminum handrail with bolts and nuts.
It is unbreakable.
