Context of dirty battery terminals (leads, connectors)
It is absolutely normal to find white or blue powder on the battery terminals of a car or any other oily and dirty stuff, especially on the negative terminal.
You should clean your car battery connectors and terminals from time to time and as soon as you notice the powder especially this does not require disconnecting the battery or using any tool!.
You do not have to worry about re-entering the radio code for example.

Cleaning battery terminals from white or blue stuff with hot water |
Battery leads do not need to be disconnected
Step 1: Simply bring tap water to a boil in an old coffee pot or casserole, then pour the water on the battery terminals. The water will cool down a bit while you walk from your gas stove to the car which is perfect as it should not be boiling while you use it to clean the battery terminals.
The result is immediate:

Step 2: Spray generously WD-40 or any equivalent on the battery terminals and that's it!
Do not use the WD40 to clean your battery terminals, it is never as effective as hot water. WD 40 is used after cleaning for protecting the terminals, although a coat of white silicone grease will provide better results and for a longer period.

Battery terminals need to be disconnected
Alternatively, you may use this specific car battery terminal brush tool to clean them (see further below for buying it). Two tools are required, one for each of the positive and negative leads, since the diameter is not the same.
This requires disconnecting the leads, unlike the hot water method.
