It was the post world war II period.
American cars of the fifties had extravagant designs with crazy fenders and bumpers and V8s to power the over-sized chrome plated models. The 1950 American cars were also unbreakable.
1950's European automakers focused again on cars after having shifted to weapons and ammunition during the war. The European offer of the fifties was divided into two main categories: family sedans and small popular vehicles accessible to everyone.
Japanese automakers were still too young to make any noticeable model.
Geniuses came back to work and Citroën launched at least two models with advanced and sophisticated features and suspension. The 1954 Citroën DS in particular was 20 years ahead of its time.
Below a collection of car photos of the fifties with a brief description and summary of the specifications.

PONTIAC STREAMLINER SILVER STREAK 8
Year launched: 1949 (till 1951) Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS Transmission: rear wheel drive. Length: 5.144 m Wheelbase: 3.048 m Engines: 4.1L, 4.4L |
If you find the model name of this Pontiac a bit long, it's because the main model remains the Pontiac Streamliner which was made available in specific "Silver Streak" styling and and additional 8 between the two words as seen on the front fender whenever it was fitted with the Pontiac 8 in-line engine.
This vehicle is not renovated yet, although no trace of ageing shows anywhere except the faded paint indeed. A proof of the incredible durability of the American cars of the fifties. |

BUICK ROADMASTER (6TH GENERATION)
Year launched: 1954 (till 1956) Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS Transmission: rear wheel drive. Length: around 5.5m differs depending on the model-year. Wheelbase: 3.226 m Engines: 5.3L (V8) Production: 170,000 units. |
A large Buick with plenty of room inside and chrome outside; the latter covered all sides of the car. Note well the design of the radiator grille and its resemblance to a whales / shark mouth.
The car was powered by a single choice of engine: GM's V8 of that period. The below renovated Roadmaster is simply perfect. |

CITROËN 2CV
Year launched: 1948 (till 1990) Manufacturer: CITROËN Transmission: front wheel drive Length: 3.86 m Wheelbase: 2.40 m Engine: 600 cm³ Production: 9 Million including all variants, Dyane, Mehari, Ami, etc. |
Probably the most genius simplistic car ever made since the Citroën 2CV had it all: a look like no other car, small size, spacious and luminous cabin, fabric roof that opens and uncovers all seats, minimal 2-cylinder flat-twin engine that saves both space and fuel, exceptional and unique suspension with front / rear interaction keeping the car level on uneven roads, every possible kind of alternative version like a van, a pick-up, a buggy or Jeep-like off-roader (Mehari) and up to a 4x4 model powered by two engines one at the front and one at the rear! All that combined to low-cost, low maintenance and durability...
