FIAT 1300 - 1500 / Italian elegance and a pioneer of globalization
FIAT 1300 - 1500
Year launched: 1961 (till 1967) Manufacturer: FIAT Transmission: rear wheel drive. Length: 4.030 m Wheelbase: 2.425 m Engines: 1.3L (FIAT 1300), 1.5L (FIAT 1500) Production: some 1,900,000 including Seat, Zastava and Polski Fiat of the same models. |
The FIAT 1300 and 1500 constituted the large model of FIAT in the sixties combining an elegant and classic design to a spacious and luminous cabin. The FIAT 1300/1500 constituted one of the first examples of wide globalization and "badge engineering" with production occurring in Spain, Yugoslavia and Poland under the local brands in these countries, respectively SEAT, Zastava and Polski FIAT. This model had a relatively short life in its home country since it was replaced by the Fiat 124 only 7 years after its launch unlike Fench or German competitors who used to keep the model for 10 to 15 years by that period.

Peugeot 404 - Style and durability
PEUGEOT 404
Year launched: 1960 (till 1975) Manufacturer: Peugeot SA Transmission: rear wheel drive. Length: 4.442 m Wheelbase: 2.650 m Engines: 1.5L, 1.6L, 1.9L (Diesel) Production: 2.9 Million units worldwide including South American and African assemblies up to 1980 and 1991 respectively. |
The Peugeot 404 combined style (Pininfarina) to durability and value. The 404 coupé and convertible were of an absolute chic like if part of the LVMH group products nowadays.
The Peugeot 404 pick-up pictured in 2019 in Senegal down here was and still is an African workhorse like its successor the 504. The overall styling of the Peugeot 404 was typical to that period with round headlights and vertical thin taillights. |

The original Fiat Cinquecento (500) - Maximum from a minimum
FIAT 500
Year launched: 1957 (till 1975) Manufacturer: FIAT Transmission: rear wheel drive (rear engine) Length: 2.970 m Wheelbase: 1.84 m Engine: 479, 499, 594 cm³ Production: 3.9 Million |
One of the genius creations of the post war era with maximum space made available in the minimum possible vehicle configuration. The FIAT Cinquecento (500 in Italian) offered an excellent drag coefficient (0.38) combined to an ultra-light body weight of some 500 Kg (a second reason making of it a "Cinquecento" along with the engine size) and a small 2-cylinder engine of around 500cc. Some early low emission - low cost - low maintenance - high elegance magical combination which contributed for sure to its success.

Hindustan Ambassador - Icon of a country
The Hindustan ambassador was based on the Morris Oxford Series III car and went into production in India's Tamil Nadu for more than 40 years. Its robust chassis and engine made of it the typical Indian workhorse widely used for cabs in all Indian towns but also the preferred choice of politicians.
Four generations dubbed Mark-I to Mark-IV followed till the end of production with some modernization in between mainly consisting of a face-lift, dashboard modification or the optional air conditioner.
The Ambassador brand was purchased by Peugeot (PSA) in 2017 for a sum of 12 Million USD but no production of a new Ambassador car has debuted yet.

Chevrolet Impala - Stretched linear design, roomy interior and... trunk
CHEVROLET IMPALA (Third Generation)
Year launched: 1961 (till 1964) Manufacturer: General Motors Transmission: rear wheel drive Length: 5.315 m Wheelbase: 3.025 m Engines: 3.8 (I6), 4.6, 5.4, 5.7, 6.7 and 7.0L (all V8) |
A straight line and rectangular / cubic design in contrast with the exuberant designs of the American cars of the earlier generation. Amazingly, every year model of the Chevy Impala from 1961 till 1964 included a restyling. The Impala was available as sedan, coupé, coupé convertible and station wagon.
The coupé was definitely more elegant. The two below 4-door sedan Impalas are of a different year model and are waiting for a passionate to buy them. |

The overall design like many other European cars of the late fifties was inspired by American vehicles. It was available in 2-door, 4-door and station wagon versions like most of its competitors. Very pleased to find this one, that looks more like a well preserved original car rather than a renovated one!

Original Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 - Robust go-anywhere vehicle
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER (FJ40)
Year launched: 1960 (till 1984) Manufacturer: Toyota Transmission: rear wheel drive / four wheel drive Length: 3.84 m Wheelbase: 2.285 m Engines: 3.9L Petrol and 3.0L Diesel (in the sixties) Body: 2-door Soft or Hard top, 2-door pick-up, 4-door SW |
The famous Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 of the sixties and seventies, shown here abandoned in a wasteland. A robust 4x4 indeed which seems to have suffered however from some corrosion problems in some countries. The early versions had 3 gears only and no reducer. A shame Toyota completely transformed the Land Cruiser family into bulk, heavy, expensive and luxurious vehicles without keeping an entry level version of a simple and practical nature like this one.

This 2-door hatchback coupé was an MGB roadster redesigned by Pininfarina to accommodate a fixed roof. The car had a back lid making of it a hatchback. No doubt a very stylish and comfortable hatch. The British style of the sixties and seventies constituted the main attractiveness of this model which remains very classic mechanically with a front longitudinal engine and rear wheel drive transmission. And like many British cars, a specific version was fitted with the famous Rover V8 engine!
