Still on wheels and taking the road on daily basis.
Did probably not beat (yet) Greek taxi driver Gregorios Sachinidis' 1976 model which was driven for 4.6 million kilometers... Elegant classic design (Paul Bracq), icon of durability. Used a unique nomenclature based on the engine size followed by the number of cylinders and separated by a dot, like 230.4 for the 2.3l 4-cyl petrol engine version. MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS (W114/W115)
Year launched: 1968 (till 1976) Manufacturer: Daimler Benz AG Transmission: rear wheel drive Length: 4.680 m Wheelbase: 2.750 m Engines: 4-cyl: 2.0, 2.2, 2.3 (Petrol); 6-cyl: 2.3, 2.5, 2.8 (Petrol); 4-cyl: 2.2, 2.4 (Diesel); 6-cyl: 3.0 (Diesel). |

Is there anything that can stop the Renault 12?
Nothing seems to end the life of this surprisingly durable Renault still used in some countries as a utility vehicle or even family car! No doubt its rear rigid axle helped a lot in maintaining the integrity of its chassis. The engine is simply unbreakable. A shame most owners abandoned the idea of fixing the body and paint. |
RENAULT 12

British elegance of the 60's and 70's for both exterior and interior styles is well shown in this all-time classic and distinguished Rover 3500. It made the V8 Rover engine famous and provided an alternative to Jaguar. This specimen is fortunately well maintained and includes absolutely all original badges and accessories.

The Citroën CX was like its predecessor the DS an advanced car for its time offering a range of unique or unmatched features like the outstanding aerodynamic drag coefficient, its enhanced hydro-pneumatic self-leveling suspension, the power steering with automatic return to the center-point, the spaceship style dash instruments, etc. Surely the last Citroën to knock out the competition at its launch!
CITROËN CX (PRESTIGE shown here)
Year launched: 1974 - 1991 Manufacturer: Citroën Transmission: front wheel drive Length: 4.666 m Wheelbase: 2.845 m Engines: 2.0 to 2.4L gasoline, 2.5L diesel Production: 1.2 million |

PEUGEOT 304
Year launched: 1969 - 1980 Manufacturer: Peugeot Transmission: front wheel drive Length: 4.14 m Wheelbase: 2.595 m Engines: 1.3L gasoline, 1.6L diesel Production: 1.2 million |
The Peugeot 304 was made famous thanks to its coupé and cabriolet versions. It was the second generation FWD vehicle within the Peugeot range after the 204. Styled by Pininfarina, it was also a well-built car as shown in this picture with minimum corrosion and a chassis that seems to be unharmed despite being abandoned for a long time.

PEUGEOT 504
Year launched: 1968 - 1983 (France) Manufacturer: Peugeot Transmission: rear wheel drive Length: 4.49 m Wheelbase: 2.74 m Engines: 1.8L, 2.0L, 2.7L (V6) Petrol, 1.9L, 2.1L, 2.3L Diesel Production: 3.5 million |
The Peugeot 504 could be the most robust car ever manufactured benefiting from a particularly strong chassis and very simple yet indestructible engines which made it very popular in African and South American countries where it was assembled up to 2004. The below pictures taken in 2019 in Senegal confirm the continued use of this car as a workhorse regardless of the version (station wagon and pick-up in particular) or age. The Pininfarina signed design is still elegant and can be appreciated on renovated vehicles.

FIAT 124
Year launched: 1966 - (till 1974) Manufacturer: FIAT Transmission: rear wheel drive Length: 4.03 m Wheelbase: 2.42 m Engines: 1.2L, 1.5L, 1.6L, 1.8L Production: Probably a little less than 18 million including the LADA models based on it. |
An elegant classic family sedan; its design was sold to more than a foreign car manufacturer, in particular the Russian Lada which manufactured 15 million units until 2012...making of it the second most produced car in history.
The car existed in coupé and station wagon variants, all spacious and elegant like it should be for an Italian vehicle. The below perfectly renovated FIAT 124 was taken in picture in Geneva Switzerland in 2019. |
FIAT 132
Year launched: 1972 - (till 1981) Manufacturer: FIAT Transmission: rear wheel drive Length: 4.405 m Wheelbase: 2.557 m Engines: 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L (Petrol), 2.0L, 2.5L (Diesel) |
The Flagship of FIAT of the seventies and one of the rare large family cars 100% designed and manufactured by FIAT. No doubt an elegant and classic car fitted with comfortable suspensions. The transmission to the rear wheels and a relatively short wheelbase made the road handling less efficient however, but it was also the case of the BMW's of that period.
It seems the owner of this FIAT 132 2000 could not find the original side mirrors and had to fit plastic ones; everything else is original while its blue is simply ravishing. |
2ND GENERATION PONTIAC FIREBIRD
Year launched: 1970 - (till 1981) Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS Transmission: rear wheel drive Length: 4.999 m Wheelbase: 2.748 m Engines: Almost all L6, V6 and V8s available from GM's range of the period. From 3.8L to 7.5L! |
The below picture relates to a 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. The second generation Firebird of the seventies sold for around 1.2 million units. That's quite a success (particularly the 1976-77-78-79 models) for a car that only existed in a 2-door coupe version.
Four sub-models of the Pontiac Firebird existed, Base, Esprit, Formula and Trans-Am. The sportiest versions were equipped with over-sized 4-barrel carburetor fueled V8s and road handling packs like gas shock absorbers. |

FIAT X1/9
Year launched: 1972 - (till 1982 by FIAT and 1989 by BERTONE) Manufacturer: FIAT, then BERTONE Transmission: rear wheel drive, mid-mounted engine Length: Approx 3.9 m Wheelbase: 2.2 m Engines: 1.3L and 1.5L |
One of those lessons of elegance offered by Bertone to the car industry. This 2-seater with a mid-mount engine and rear wheel drive configuration looked like no other car and is still unique. The X1/9 remained in production for 17 years, which was not quite unusual during the seventies, however without losing its pure and simple beauty from start till end of the production years.
