Symptoms of leaking ignition coil seals on the Renault Trafic
The below symptoms are common to leaking ignition coils, denoting the need to clean and insulate them:
- Rough idle
- Increased engine noise
- Misfires from time to time, especially upon accelerating and re-accelerating
- Check engine light goes on and off from time to time
- Generation of a misfire code on a particular cylinder: P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 and/or P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354. The last digit denotes the faulty cylinder number.
- Could generate random misfire code P0300
- Loss of power
- Increased fuel consumption
IMPORTANT: The above symptoms are also common to leaking coils, i.e. high voltage leaks. Click on the below button to see how to fix or replace COPs.
Context of misfires caused by water ingress on Renault Trafic
If your engine (here an F4R, 2.0 16V shown) has no cover or if you had removed its cover, you might have experienced misfires due to water entering the spark plugs wells. The below picture shows how the spark plug well is corroded, as well as the metallic parts of the spark plug. The COP shows a clear trace of how the water accumulated in the well.
This is due to the coil seals, which become loose with time as shown in the below pictures.

How to rebuild worn ignition coil seals on any vehicle or engine
Simply use self-amalgamating tape to wrap the body of the COP where the seal fits.
Make sure to elongate the tape while applying it.
Do this after cleaning the COPs but before insulating them with silicone.

Refit the seal on top of the self amalgamating tape wrap.
Put some WD40 or any penetrating oil on a cloth and clean the spark plugs wells while twisting the cloth with a large flat screwdriver.
Complete the fix by cleaning and adjust your spark plugs. Refit the COPs, connect them and start the engine.
