Windshield washer cicruit problems
Windshield washer systems are usually reliable and designed to work trouble free over long periods of time.
Nevertheless, they do have two ennemies:
Nevertheless, they do have two ennemies:
- Water, if used in your windhshield wash circuit as is, instead of washer liquid
- Heat from both engine and sunlight, which degrades the tubes, making them larger with time, thus reducing the system pressure and consequently the spray jet reach
- Cleaning
- Testing
- Replacing defective parts
Fixing clogged windscreen washer spray nozzles
Open the hood and look to its back where you will find the windshield washer nozzles along with the washer tubes.
Pull out by hand the windshield nozzle tube and use long nose pliers to press on the spray nozzle holders so it can pass the hole and be removed from the hood.

Take out the windshield spray nozzle from the other side of the hood and let it soak in white vinegar while you proceed to the windscreen wash tank and pump inspection and cleaning.

Windscreen tank and pump cleaning
The windshield wash tank could be located beneath the hood like shown in this Dacia Duster but the most frequent location remains inside the right fender which requires to remove the inner fender mudguard for access.
It is much faster in this case where the plastic grille beneath the hood is simply removed to access the windscreen wash tank and pump.

Once you access your windscreen washer tank, you will notice that the washer pump is fixed to it.
Unplug the windshield washer pump connector and disconnect the washer tubes.
One or two bolts will be holding the windscreen washer tank to the car body, take them out to free the tank.

It is necessary to use a flat screwdriver in this case to push the tank out of its seat.
The washer pump can also be dismantled very easily by simply pulling it out of the tank.

Cleaning the windshield washer tank, pump and refitting
Empty the windscreen washer tank from its contents and clean it well with whatever household detergent and warm or hot water.
Use a brush with a long steel wire handle to reach all parts inside the tank.
The tank should be clean like new as shown in the below pictures.
Put the pump inlet under running water from any tap or hose to clear whatever particles inside of it.
Reverse above steps to reassemble the windshield washer system:

Reverse above steps to reassemble the windshield washer system:
- Refit the windscreen pump to the tank
- Refit the tank beneath the hood or inside the fender
- Connect the windscreen wash tubes and the electrical wires of the pump
- Reinstall the plastic grille or the fender mudguard
- Refit the spray nozzles
- Fill with windshield wash liquid
- Activate the windscreen washer prior to reconnecting the tubes to the nozzles in order to flush them
- Reconnect the windshield wash tubes to the spray nozzles
What to do if none of nozzle and reservoir cleaning solved your windshield washer problem?
Once you clean everything, if you're still facing a water jet problem, like for example the jet is too short and does not reach the windshield, then you can be sure of one of two possible problems:
Always start by replacing the tubes as this should solve the problem, before paying the price of the pump and replacing it. As a matter of fact, rubber washer tubes tend to get loose and have their diameter increased, which is not exactly visible or detected by your eyes, and this reduces the outlet pressure at nozzle level, thus the decrease of the water jet reach.
- Defective windshield wash pump (more probable on old vehicles)
- Enlarged windshield washer tubes (more probable on recent vehicles)
