How to remove a carburetor (carburettor) from vehicle

BEFORE YOU START
  • Do not work on a hot engine and do not forget that you should not smoke during this potentially hazardous intervention.
  • Dropping screws could turn into a real headache. A particular care should be considered when handling items that have been dismounted from the carburetor body.

Note: The below pictorial concerns a Solex 34-34 Z1 (34/34 Z1) carburetor found on Citroën BX, Citroën XM 2.0, Peugeot 305, Peugeot 309, Peugeot 505 2.0, Peugeot 605 2.0, etc. Works on other carburetors remain much similar.

1- Disconnect the battery.

2- Remove the carburetor cover and the air filter.
3- Make sure nothing blocks the carburetor all around.
4- Pull out the vacuum line and the connector of the fuel heater if you have one.
5- Disconnect all control solenoids.

6- Unscrew the fuel hose fixing collar.​

7- Gently pull out the fuel hose.
​
8- Unscrew the coolant hoses fixing collars.
9- The hoses could be sticky and impossible to move.
10- Do not hesitate to cut their tips.

11- Remove the spring that holds and adjusts the throttle cable.

12- Rotate the throttle drum by hand and take the throttle control cable out of its groove.
13- Take the cable end pin out of its seat using long nose pliers.
14- Use a ratchet to unscrew the base fixing bolts.
15- You would need a swivel connector to reach one or more bolts.
16- Tilt the carburetor and take it out.
17- Put it in a metal tray.
18- Do not forget to collect all gaskets and spacers between the carb's base and the inlet collector.
