The carburetor (carburettor) diy gasket material and tools

Two different kinds of carburetor gasket material can be easily found in DIY shops:
  • Cork
  • Paper
  • Non-Asbestos
The paper is preferred and is to be used wherever its thickness is sufficient, noting the different thicknesses are there.
Cork is fragile but has the advantage of providing a thick gasket that can absorb carburetor base irregularities.
Non Asbestos is the strongest but not necessarily available everywhere like for paper or cork.
Do not use rubber for the carburetor mounting gasket, not all rubbers are gasoline and heat resistant.
Rubber in carburetors is limited to some O-rings, but is not used as sheets.

Cutting the carburetor gaskets

Use the scissors to cut the outlines of the carburetor gasket in any of the paper, cork or non-asbestos sheet.
Also for cutting holes inside the base as shown in the middle picture.
You cannot use the scissors however for the bolts holes and neither a knife cutter, since such holes are so small and must be a perfect circle. That's why the gasket hole punch is needed.
  • Select the hole punch that fits the carburetor bolts diameter. 
  • Do not chose a punch that's larger than the bolt. It should be a match.
  • Adjust the gasket hole punch over the hole location.
  • Work over a piece of wood.
  • Hit the punch with a hammer.
  • Your hit should be short and quite strong.
