Most common types of lamp sockets

There are many types of lamp sockets but only two are common for shade table lamps:
  • The large screw type socket called "Screw Cap" or "E27"
  • The small screw type socket called "Small Edison Screw" or "E14"
You might encounter a lighting fixture with shade using a bayonet type socket called "B22" especially ceiling lights.

E14 and B22 sockets are of the same external diameter. The same shade works for both.
E27 sockets are larger. You cannot fit a lamp shade designed for an E14 socket on it but the reverse is possible by using a reducer, or if you prefer, an E14 to E27 adapter, as shown below:

Using the lamp shade (lampshade) reducing ring | E14 to E27 adapter

The below table lamps are fitted with a B22 socket (lamp to the left) and E14 socket (lamp to the right).
The shade has a larger hole suitable for E27 sockets.
Lampshade (lamp shade) reducer rings are shown here, supplied in pack of 2, one white and one gold.
Insert the E14 to E27 adapter ring into the lampshade (lamp shade) hole then install your shade normally. That's it!
