Manufacturer's recommended oils
STEP 1: Find the recommended motor oil for your vehicle.
This could not be an easy exercise since car manufacturers often do not clearly state the oil grade and quality in the user manual.
They would simply ask you to use the "recommended motor oil".
Labels found in engine compartment would also point to brands of products with no further details.
You need to search the web using your engine model, vehicle model or more generally recommended oils chart by the car manufacturer for its range of engines and find the info as issued by the car manufacturer (OEM), NOT the motor oil site.

Or, you simply wish to find cheaper alternative oils that are equivalent to the OEM's recommended ones.
Proceed as follows:
- Search within your country for the available oils of the same grade than the OEM recommended ones
- Download their datasheets or call the local distributor and ask for the data sheet.
- Build a comparative chart similar to the one below (click on image for enlarging). You may download a template further below.
- List the OEM oil characteristics in one or more column depending on how many oils are recommended (see "Reference Oils" column).
- List the other motor oils and mark with green the ones that match, orange the ones that could be used as a second choice and red the ones which are not at all equivalent.
- The criteria is to have close viscosity values, then equal or superior flash point.
- Buy and use any of the reference oils as given by the OEM or the equivalent products you found. You are now sure to safely drive your vehicle.
