The PSA EP6 1.6 VTi and 1.6 THP Engine: problems, reliability, maintenance and repair. The PSA EP6 engine is found on many Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Vauxhall and Mini Cooper models. The 4-cylinder direct injection 1.6 L engine, exists in two main versions, atmospheric (1.6 VTi) and turbo (1.6 THP), with many sub-versions providing more power or being more flexible depending on the cars they equip and their required use.
Many early problems appeared on the engine since its launch by 2005, and were gradually solved, but apart from the very early timing chain elongation issue which was finally eliminated in 2011, all other problems were happening outside the engine itself, like the high pressure injection pump failure, the vacuum pump failure, the thermostat, the turbo cooling pump and some issues with the coil-on-plug ignitors, most having been solved before 2016. The engine crank, crankshafts, pistons and rings, valves, etc. do not suffer from any early wear and remain within the known good reliability of Peugeot engines.
