Symptoms of a defective dephaser VVT pulley on PSA EB2 engine
- Metallic hammering (rattling) noise from engine when cold, and upon accelerating
- Noise could vanish completely once the engine warms up and reaches its normal working temperature
- Generation of OBDII fault code "Inlet camshaft position (coherence) - Intermittent"
If you're experiencing the above symptoms, you need to replace the defective VVT pulley (Inlet or Exhaust) with a new one as shown in this pictorial.
Preparatory works for the VVT pulley replacement
- Remove the Peugeot EB2 engine cylinder head cover, click on the below button for details.
- You need to have the EB2 engine timing tool, shown in the picture to the right (see bottom of page also).
- Lift your vehicle to the front left side.
- Using the front wheel and while always turning it forward with the gear on 4th speed, bring the engine to its timing position (round face of timing tool seats pointing downwards).
- Confirm the timing position by inserting the pin of the timing tool into the flywheel, click on below button for more details.
Fit the timing tool and tighten the bolt that holds the two parts of the timing tool together firt, then tighten its holding bolts to the cylinder head.

Removing the defective dephaser on Peugeot 1.2 VTi engine
Proceed as follows:
- Slacken the serpentine belt tensioner and remove it
- Remove the serpentine belt
- Remove the crankshaft pulley and water pump belt
Remove the timing belt tensioner cover.
Slacken the defective VVT pulley bolt and gently take it out to the left from beneath the timing belt.

Refitting a new inlet or exhaust Variable Valve Timing pulley
Lubricate the moving parts of the VVT pulley (dephaser) with motor oil, refit it to the cmahsaft along with the new bolt that is supplied with it. Tighten the bolt to 2mKg then to 120 degrees angle.
Gently refit the timing belt and poceed to the timing belt refitting and adjustment procedure.
